Steva, Vlada & Scouts – August 2007

In August 2007 the Scouting movement held a World Jamboree to celebrate their Centenary. This event, which was being held in Essex England, was being attended by the Scouts from Sremska Mitrovica. Following their time in Essex, the Serbian Scouts were coming to Wales to spend a week with the Scouts in Caerphilly.

The Blazing to Serbia team saw this as an opportunity to bring some of the Serbian Firefighters to Wales and to introduce the Serbian Scouts to the Young Firefighters at Caerphilly Fire Station.

The Serbian Firefighters spent the week meeting the Chief Fire Officer and visiting Fire Service Headquarters, the Training Centre and the Control room. They also attended and participated in the activities that were planned for the Scouts and Young Firefighters. This meant that they went gorge walking, bowling, visited the cinema and Caerphilly Castle, went swimming in the sea and rode roller coasters at Oakwood theme park in West Wales.

World Rescue Competition – July 2008

In July 2008, South Wales Fire & Rescue Service hosted the World Rescue Competition in Cardiff. This event, which showcases how best to extricate casualties from crashed vehicles, is attended by teams from all over the world.

Blazing to Serbia had managed to secure a place so that Serbia could compete in this competition for the first time.

The Serbian team, Officials from the Interior Ministry and translators were collected from Heathrow Airport and taken to Cardiff for four days of equipment familiarisation and competition.

During these four days the Serbians met with the Chief Officer of South Wales Fire & Rescue Service and Officials from the World Rescue Organisation and everyone was delighted with their attendance and their level of skill and professionalism.

The Blazing to Serbia team had collected the rescue team from Palm Harbor in Florida the day before they collected the Serbians, so the whole week consisted of the three Countries competing and socialising together. This benefited all concerned and certainly added to the value and enjoyment of the competition.

Filip – Road trip 2010

Filip Sakan, who is a former Scout from Sremska Mitrovica, has been present at every Blazing to Serbia visit to Serbia. He is selfless with his time and is been an ever present since our first visit to Serbia in March 2007. Filip is a quality translator and a valued supporter of Blazing to Serbia. Filip wanted to be part of the first Blazing to Serbia convoy to drive across Europe in October 2010, so he flew into Luton Airport and stayed with one of the team until the convoy departed from Caerphilly Castle.

Steva & Toma – July 2014

Our good friends Steva & Toma from Sremska Mitrovica flew into the UK to join us on our third convoy across Europe. Due to their translator failing to get a visa on time, the communication en-route to Offenbach in Germany was difficult. Thanks to our friends at Belgrade Foreign Visitors Club, our communication difficulties were short lived, as they found a volunteer translator, which we flew into Frankfurt. Maria was to prove invaluable the following day when one of the trucks had mechanical problems. Steva was then in the thick of the removal of the starter motor in the car park of our hotel in Linz.

Serbian ladies – August 2014

Two ladies from the Red Cross at Sremska Mitrovica and a translator came to Wales to meet up with the Welsh Red Cross. This provided an opportunity for an exchange of ideas and allowed both parties to gain an understanding of the work of the others. This initiative is something that Blazing to Serbia aims to progress in the future.
